Chickie

Chickie arrived at DCER as an owner surrender on October 24th, 2025, and her journey to us was nothing short of lifesaving. After years of faithfully protecting the cows on her farm, she was at risk of being shot once the herd was sold. Thanks to our longtime volunteer, Curtis, who learned about her situation and immediately alerted our team, we were able to act quickly. Within hours, arrangements were made to bring Chickie to safety and welcome her into our barnyard family.

But when the trailer door opened, our hearts sank. Chickie’s hooves were in devastating condition; far worse than we expected. We moved urgently to get her the care she needed. Under sedation at the vet, our farrier removed a significant amount of overgrowth, giving her much-needed relief.

Chickie still has a long road ahead, but we’re hopeful. With consistent care, we believe that within six months, she’ll make remarkable progress. Through it all, she has shown nothing but gentleness and grace.

We can’t wait for the day she’s healthy enough to roam freely and finally join the herd she deserves!
